The New York Public Library has twenty-two issues of the Green Book digitized. The purpose of this book is explained in this image taken from the 1957 edition.
For more historical background on this attempt to make possibly life-saving local knowledge available to African American travelers, see Jacinda Townsend, “How the Green Book Helped African-American Tourists Navigate a Segregated Nation.” Be sure to visit the New York Public Library’s digitized pages as well. Unlike the Spartacus guide, this one does not translate local knowledge. Instead, it mainly just lists places. Given the context, however, this was no small matter.
